Big thanks to Kala Barba-Court for featuring my brand-new series ANIMA – Silenced Souls in the PLAIN magazine.

“I think I could turn and live with animals, they are so placid and self-contain’d, I stand and look at them long and long…” These lines from a Walt Whitman poem are a perfect fit to Anima, the latest series by photographer Florian W. Mueller (previously featured), who plunges us into a world of exceptional tone and ambiance in these compelling portraits of taxidermy animals.

Shot up close, he focuses on the texture, faces and particularly the eyes of the stuffed animals. Though long dead, stuffed and staged, the melancholic images portray a certain dignity. The series carries a bit of a warning note as well: That these immobile, soul-less forms could be what the future holds if we continue to treat nature, animals and plants at the rate we’re going.
